  • Renaming New Mexico to “New America” would erase an important part of the state’s history and identity. The name New Mexico dates back centuries to the Spanish name Nuevo México, long before the United States was founded. The state has a unique cultural heritage shaped by Native American, Hispanic, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American influences, and “New Mexico” reflects that history. Changing the name to “New America” could be seen as replacing a distinctive state identity with a more generic national one, while also creating confusion because “America” is commonly used to refer to the United States as a whole. There are also practical and constitutional problems with the proposal. A president cannot simply rename a state by executive order; changing a state’s official name would require action through the state’s constitutional and legal processes. It would also mean changing government documents, maps, road signs, addresses, records, websites, and countless other materials at cons

  • When there is a real world threat to federal overreach, by all means, report it. But this isn’t “overreach”. It’s an old man with his phone, spewing ragebate to get clicks, and distract from his failure as a president. The New Mexico constitution states its name and can’t be overridden by a tweet. Rhode Island set president for state name change back in 2020. He has absolutely not power, so why are we wasting our time. It’s not overreach; it’s overdone. You as the press have an ethical responsibility to tell impactful stories to the public, not clog the minds with every sensationalized BS that comes out of the deranged mouths of attention seeking politicians.

  • The other things the president has renamed have been “shared” with other nations. Lakes and Gulfs that we do not directly own are very different than our beautiful state of New Mexico. New Mexicans do NOT want our state name to be changed, and the president does not have the executive power to do such a thing. New Mexico is NOT New America.

  • I’m not the White House, I’m the governor as you previously addressed me. I don’t know why the White House would issue a statement at all if his comments are merely a distraction but I’m issuing a statement to calm any fears our states constituents might have over him seriously considering a name change he has no power to do in the first place. Again not mutually exclusive, I can take his statements as a joke because he’s a joke and also issue a statement to our people.

  • If Trumps so abatement on making this country more “American” maybe we should start by changing his last name. The surname Trump comes from German roots, tracing back to Palatinate and Bavaria. Let’s see how he’d like it if we changed his name. And if he argues that his names holds historical value, so does the state of New Mexico.

  • Yes, but it’s not a federal claim, threat, or crime. He physically can not change the name. He can make a new map and hang it up in his office, or make a tshirt that says new America, but he physically can not change our state constitution. The first sentence is “our state is named New Mexico” he would need to amend this which is not in his authority. And amending the federal constitution to allow this would be so many violations and would never happen. We do not need to give this any more air time at all. It’s been a slow news week, but that doesn’t mean we need to invent new problems

  • Polling shows that the public is not on board with Trump’s renaming spree. They will not be fooled into thinking that is actual change that “makes America great again.” The public cares about improvements for quality of life and pricing and to end conflicts in the Middle East. They want their money to stop going to Israel. These are the priorities and the items Trump is distracting from. It does not concede ground to future challenges because, again, this is an idle threat that he cannot follow through on. I will ignore the bully until he gets bored and picks on someone else.

  • Let’s look at what would happen if we didn’t fight. If we didn’t, then we would just roll over and let Trump rename our state, then what else would he want? He would probably mandate that we halt the investigation at Zorro Ranch. He might start demanding our voter information to suppress the vote and remove political enemies’ voter registration. If we rolled over and let him do whatever he wanted to us, that would be thoroughly a disservice to the state.
