We have seen a rise in domestic attackers from foreign nations and a rise in shootings. Our snipers will identify and neutralize threats before they can hurt employees and sight seers
The sheer height of the monument alone allows for a great strategic advantage. Not to mention the location being close to other monuments and strategic buildings like congress and the white house
If there were credible threats of terrorist attacks on the Arlington cemetery itself, or immediately adjacent locations, then maybe some military presence here might make sense, but not permanently in such a gaudy fashion. Using this location for “drones and snipers” is a very strangely specific and short-range design for military defenses. Unless this is actually the best tech we have to defend against incoming drone attacks, which maybe it is - in which case this might make sense - then this military complex is completely missing the mark
There is a fine line between protection and control. On one hand, yes it could be used to protect from terrorist or other attacks on political figures. Though that could also be prevented through greater personal security and or better police funding. Arming this memorial therefore seems unnecessary, unless one was trying to convey power over the people, which is not a message that the US government should be trying to convey.
They aren’t mutually exclusive and both things can be true at once. It’s not a military outpost in the typical sense where you see it and think military. It will be seen as a memorial by citizens with its military purpose operating behind the scenes providing domestic security
Most of the public wanted me to go through Congress to get approval. A lot of lawsuits were filed and organizations spoke against the arch because the arch didn’t have the current Congress approval. Now that most of Congress has agreed on the Arch those people have no reason to oppose the arch because I went through Congress. It translates to direct community support because I listened to the public’s opinion to do my best to make them happy.
