Ramaswamy faces bipartisan backlash over ad featuring opponent's estranged mother

Republican Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing significant bipartisan criticism over a campaign advertisement featuring the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton, who calls Acton a liar. President Donald Trump has publicly defended the ad and urged Ramaswamy to continue running it, while Ohio's current Republican Governor Mike DeWine and other Republicans have called for its removal.

  • The immorality of the ad holds if her mother's statements are on public record. The fact of the matter is that most voters aren't doing a deep dive into the personal lives and pasts of the candidates in the election. The ad made sure to highlight her mother's statements, which although are publicly available, are probably not going to be seen by most voters. Ramaswamy forced voters to see this side of Acton, and the huge controversy behind the ad makes it even worse, causing the ad to spread further. If Vivek had not used the ad, far fewer voters would have seen her mother's statements. Voters have a right to know, and this is mitigated by the availability of the records, but they don't have an obligation to know, which is what Vivek is forcing.

  • Flaunting someone’s childhood trauma says more about YOUR character than the victim’s character. This strategy will likely earn Acton sympathy votes, since people now know she was sexually abused as a child. It also paints Ramaswamy, Vance, and Trump in a very harsh, inhumane light, which is not what the republicans need right now. Many Americans already see the republicans as pedophile sympathizers, since they did not fully release the Epstein files and no one was held accountable. This does not help that accusation.

  • It didnt. I just said we DID NOT vet the mother and the story. Since we DID not vet them we couldn’t have possibly know the facts involved. It was an oversight issue and once it was brought to our attention we the pulled the ad in good faith. Geez your dense

  • The ad seemed to have two purposes: get people talking about ramaswamy’s campaign, and spread negative press about Acton. It seemed to accomplish this, with the outrage causing it to reach more people. Not saying this is right, but it does what it was meant to. Sure people will be outraged, but more moderate or less informed voters will hear about it and go out to vote. By pulling the add, it further cements the moderate voter, who feels like the campaign is willing to course correct based on the voice of the people. Likewise, the hardcore supporters, while being mad about pulling the add, will still vote republican regardless. Overall this was a low blow, but I believe will have the effect the ramaswamy campaign wished.

  • Because it makes people think that even those who are close to Acton, those who have loyalty to her, show disdain for her choices. But her mother is not loyal to her. They haven’t spoken in years. Many people have this kind of relationship with their family members, and it’s sad, but is a situation that would be understood very easily and would entirely undermine the message of the ad. Knowing that Acton’s mother doesn’t care about her in the way that a mother typically would makes the ad feels much less compelling.

  • It’s more important in a political race to discuss policies and views than it is to attack an opponent. It’s also distasteful to bring up family trauma just to try to win a campaign.
