I think the biggest mistake is treating lawful gun ownership and dangerous behavior as the same thing. The man’s aggressive actions toward a candidate should be taken seriously and punished appropriately, but the fact that he legally carried firearms does not automatically make every armed person at a political event a threat. Protecting public safety and protecting constitutional rights are not mutually exclusive.
Because again it’s CLEAR that the 2nd amendment shall not be infringed. All gun laws on the books don’t curb gun violence. They are just a knee jerk reaction to make the public feel like something is being done but they never produce tangible results. It’s the 2nd amendment which means it was and is fairly high on the constitution list meaning it’s extremely important to the founders. We don’t just toss constitutional rights away to make people feel better. As a great man once said, if you sacrifice your liberty for safety you get neither
Disadvantage us in some measures, perhaps. But long term, NO. If china wants to race without safety in mind, you can watch them release an AI that attacks them, their government, their people. We can imagine that and we want to avoid that reality. It’s an irrefutable advantage for us to stop AI from doing something that would hurt ourselves eventually. If this is a game, I’d rather wear a helmet and play a longer game, instead of smashing my head just so I could get to some imaginary finish line faster.
Guns should be restricted to security personnel only. There just is not a good way to keep participants safe when guns are allowed.
An attempt to harm a citizen private or public based on political opposition. Like seen in assassination attempts prior. However here there is no clear evidence that this person was intentionally trying to harm others for their political standing.
In what way does such law impede one’s first amendment rights? It does not muzzle oneself, it does not prevent oneself from interacting with the holder of the rally, it simply prevents one from bringing a tool of killing unnecessarily to an event where someone with reasonable fear of assassination is speaking
More armed guards at these events and more look outs as well can first deter anyone trying to harm anyone by knowing that they’re being watched and two can stop anything if anything is shown to still happen, so an attacker is brought down quick with no other harm. As well id like to mention to try to not make it seem as if any political party is evil to try and ruin lives because it creates fear leading people to more likely commit these violent acts
Of course we are not going to get rid of the second amendment this second, however less guns = less violence in a contained area with high tension. Some circumstances should definetly ban weapons whether it’s a public space or not
